Kikkerland announces the winners of their newest collaboration, Developing Mexican Talent (Desarrollando Talento Mexicano)
Products selected from competition will be available in Fall 2016
January 12th, 2016 - Kikkerland Design is proud to announce the results of their newest collaboration, Developing Mexican Talent at an awards ceremony at the cutting-edge Soumaya Museum, located in Mexico City on Thursday January 14th 2016
This will mark Kikkerland’s ninth design challenge collaboration. The project invited students from top Mexican universities to design products that appeal to millennial consumers with the fun and functional style that people have come to expect from Kikkerland Design.
Four of Mexico’s top product designers, Ariel Rojo, Emiliano Godoy, and the Lara Brothers (Mauricio and Sebastian) mentored the students and their work over the course of the project. The winning item was selected on the basis of fitting the Kikkerland design philosophy, innovation, originality, and market appropriateness.
Students were tasked to design a product that combined traditional Mexican culture with the contemporary millennial generation, while also fitting into Kikkerland’s product world. The winning item of the Developing Mexican Talent project is:
The Maraca Cocktail Shaker is a great example of a product that is practical but also delights while performing its function. It successfully represents Mexican tradition in a way that appeals to millennials in Mexico.
Multiple designs received honorable mentions, including:
The above demonstrated excellence in design and met the criteria of the Developing Mexican Talent project. The winning Maraca Cocktail Shaker by Cynthia Mijares and some of the honorable mentions are under development to potentially be sent into production and sold globally as part of the Kikkerland line.
“We received a tremendous response from all over Mexico. I am proud of being able to promote many talented young Mexican designers to a worldwide audience. Doing this program with young Mexican designers gives everyone a big competitive advantage and I am proud to participate,” said Kikkerland founder Jan van der Lande.
The winning products will be available at Kikkerland.com in Fall 2016. Some of the designs from the competition will also be displayed in Kikkerland's booth at the ICFF trade show in New York, in May 2016.

Kikkerland Design (kikkerland.com) was founded by Dutchman Jan van der Lande, who launched the label in 1992 from a houseboat anchored in the Hudson River. Looking for well-designed products laced with humor, a poetic twist and a clever distortion of everyday language, van der Lande has represented young, self-producing designers since 1987. He launched the company with the works of emerging designers who would rapidly make big names for themselves in the industry, among them Hella Jongerius and Richard Hutten.
Today, Kikkerland adds 150 new items to its catalog every six months—averaging out to a remarkable one product per day. The wide-ranging collection offers everything from kitchen and bar products, stationery and tech accessories to games, tools and tabletop items for living space and the bath.
